WHY DO MOST NIGERIAN STREETWEAR BRANDS ONLY DROP TEES

by Benjamin Unah

We saw a tweet this week asking: why are Nigerian streetwear brands always spamming tees?

Let’s talk about it

First off, tees are the easiest way in.

Cheap to make, easy to sell, and way less risky. That’s the reality for most brands starting

out. And if you look around, our creative economy is still in its early stages.

Heavily inspired by global brands and creatives

But true, when all you see are tees, it feels repetitive and boring trust me, I get it

It can definitely feel like the culture isn’t moving forward.

But It’s really not about lack of ideas.

There’s a whole bunch of layers to this, It’s also about fabric access, production struggles,

and how our market reacts when prices go up.

So the question isn’t “why do brands keep making tees?”

It’s more like  “how do we support them to go further?"

Streetwear here is still building.

Criticism is fair, but context matters.

Let’s figure out how to grow the scene, not just bash it.
